Do we need to ‘domesticate the Crown’?: David Frum on renewing the monarchy in Canada. Plus, Brexit’s harms and the viability of CANZUK

Governor General Mary Simon and husband Whit Fraser join Chief Herald of Canada Samy Khalid as he proclaims the accession of the new Sovereign, King Charles III, at Rideau Hall, in Ottawa, Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022. Sean Kilpatrick/The Canadian Press.

This is the seventeenth episode of The Hub’s bi-weekly series featuring Sean Speer in conversation with leading author, journalist, and thinker David Frum. The two discuss the place of the monarchy in modern Canadian life. In particular, they focus on the need to reform the appointment process for the Governor General to ensure that he or she has some broad-based legitimacy given the office’s role in adjudicating political questions in an era of minority parliaments.

Plus, the continuing economic fallout of Brexit and whether or not CANZUK is a viable trade partnership.
