About The Hub

Who We Are

The Hub is a not-for-profit digital news outlet committed to independent analysis and spirited debate about Canada’s past, present and future.

Why The Hub?

The Hub is for readers who want to go deeper into the issues that matter. Each day our reporters and editors cover the stories and ideas driving the public conversation about politics, public policy, and the economy. We do this through a combination of traditional news reporting, expert commentary, podcasts, newsletters, videos, and social media. Canadians seem to like what The Hub has on offer with over one million users coming on our platform each month.

Full disclosure: The Hub has a point of view. We are committed to the values of economic liberty, individual choice, and principled pluralism. We also are not fans of government funding for news and journalism. This is why we signed The Ottawa Declaration calling on digital news outlets to reject government payroll subsidies.

Our Case for Support

Federal legislation will soon allow digital news outlets to fund upwards of 50 percent of their newsroom costs through direct and indirect government subsidies.

This means that not only will the news produced by the CBC be majority government funded, but so too will the news journalism of private media outlets like the Globe and Mail, Postmedia, and many local newspapers.

The Hub does not accept government subsidies. Our outlet is for readers who value independent journalism and analysis.

More government funding of news equals less public trust in the media. It undermines journalism’s role in holding the powerful, including the government, to account. In trying to save journalism, government risks killing it—with far-reaching consequences for democracy.

If you share The Hub’s belief in the importance of maintaining a truly independent press, join our community. Your support helps ensure The Hub remains a trusted source for news and analysis not funded by government subsidies
