The new memorandum of understanding on a potential oil pipeline to the West Coast stipulates that any such project from Alberta would require Indigenous co-ownership. In light of high-profile opposition from Coastal First Nations leaders in B.C., Indigenous Resource Network executive director John Desjarlais joins Alberta Edge to explain what meaningful consultation and relationship-building look like in 2025.

He breaks down the diversity of views among First Nations across Alberta and B.C., what a future pipeline deal might entail, and why a “unanimous” resolution from the Assembly of First Nations calling for the immediate withdrawal of the energy MOU doesn’t tell the whole story.
