In The Know

Is America prepared to deal with the threat of China?

China is a massive country whose military and economy is rapidly growing. From a century of poverty and humiliation they have rapidly emerged as a genuine global hegemon to rival and challenge the United States of America and Western democratic allies across the globe.

Peter Robinson discusses the rise of China and its rising conflict with America on the Hoover Institution’s Uncommon Knowledge podcast. With him are former national security advisor H. R. McMaster and former US deputy national security advisor Matthew Pottinger.

There was a common assumption in the 90s that as China modernized they would also liberalize. This has proven to be dead wrong, says McMaster, and we clung to those assumptions for too long.

But what can be done now? Should America and the West at-large really be concerned about China’s ambitions? Is the West entering a new cold war? How much of a threat is Xi Jinping’s Chinese Communist government and People’s Liberation Army to the existing world order and global security? What about Asian countries and regional allies such as Taiwan, South Korea, India and more?

They explore these issues and discuss the fear of chaos and loss of control that motivates the Chinese regime, the size and capabilities of China’s army and advanced weapons systems as compared to America’s, the likelihood of China launching an invasion of Taiwan, the ways that America and allies should respond to China’s military advances and provocations, the economic sanctions American must impose to counter China’s growth, and more.
