Does the federal budget live up to its feminist branding?: The Long Way

The government released its two-years-in-the-making federal budget early last week, but does it really live up to its shiny pronouncements? Is the budget with its plan for a national childcare program really “feminist”, or is that just branding and not much more?

The Long Way podcast tackles these issues as host Daniel Prousallidis breaks it all down with guests Andrea Mrozek, Cardus Senior Fellow, and Brian Dijkema, Cardus Vice-President of External Affairs.

“I find it insulting that we focus on mothers of young children as being the key new contributors to the economy when they have so much work on their plates already,” argues Mrozek. Her verdict? “It is a terrible budget.”

While there is some good policy inside, including Canada Worker’s Benefit enhancements, there is still quite a bit left to be desired, Dijkema believes, including in the realm of supports for the charitable sector.

“Frankly, when you see a budget where the venture capitalists receive twice as much as charity, it’s hard to call that one a winner,” he says.

Additionally, they discuss:

  • What does good child care policy look like for Canada?
  • Is Canadian child care really in crisis right across the country?
  • Is Quebec a model of high-quality, affordable child care?
